Hi All !!! I'm looking for a good backup app. Before all of you tell me to get Acronis, let me tell you something. I tried Acronis True Image Home 2009 & it crapped out on me, so I dumped it. I looked up reviews for backup apps & found this quote about it from PCMag: "Advanced features rendered our Windows XP test system unbootable. File selection bug can thwart backups of files you explicitly select for backup." It seems from earlier reviews on the site, Acronis has gotten worse after 6.0 (which I wouldn't mind trying). All I need is a simple backup app that will save the backup as an compressed image on another HD & will backup any modified files to it on a schedule I set. Also, the ability to make a bootable rescue disk seems to me to be pretty important. I did a little research & found "DriveImage XML" (which is freeware), but it seemed pretty complicated & relies on BartsPE for a rescue disk. Ya think someone would make a good backup app thats easy to use. Any ideas guys

But why you dont use Windows backup options? You can backup everything what u want. I used this tool hundreds times and allways it's worked correctly. I'm just wondering?
Cheers ABba

Thanks to both of you for your reply !
I was wondering that myself Abba, but for some reason, WinBackup isn't on my XP, so I had forgotten all about it... I did a little research on it & found I need to get it from my XP CD. I'll give it a try if Paragon doesn't work out.
Thanks for the post adminX - I'll give Paragon a try & let you know how it works out.
Thanks again to both of you.

For WinBackup, click Start -> All programs -> Accessories -> System tools -> Backup. It's there by default.

Ok... here's what happened. I downloaded Paragon (thanks again adminX) & burned it to a disk. After the burn, I inserted the disk to see what would happen. Then I remembered that somhow, my AutoInsert doesn't work (hasn't worked for years... I think one of my apps has shut it off & I have no idea which one... believe me, I'v looked). So, I opened the disk with explorer & tried to find a setup file or some .exe, but I couldn't find anything. So, I gave up. [I'm sure that with my AutoInsert turned off, I won't be able to use any rescue disk, so I don't know what I'm going to do...] Next, I looked for WinBackup everywhere on my comp, but it just wasn't there. No problem though; I just installed it off my Win CD. I's working now, but I haven't used it yet. I tried it but I'm not sure it's what I'm looking for. Will it save the backup as an compressed image on my other HD & then after that, will it backup only modified files (not all of them)? Is there a way to make a rescue disk (yes... I know... fix AutoInsert)? I guess I could clone my disk back to my 80GB, but I just bought a 320 just a month ago for more storage & cloned the 80 over to the 320 so I'm not looking foward on cloning it back (Not to mention I just don't have the room on the 80 anymore). Compression is what I need... I guess I'm just frustrating myself & making this harder than it needs to be. It seems to me that this should be pretty simple. I'll do some more looking for my autoinsert problem & keep you updated. Thanks for all your help guys !!!

Two ways: 1. Double click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop until it opens. Then gently click on your CD / DVD Rom Drive just until it becomes highlighted. Then click on the word File, which is contained in your top tool bar area. This will pull down a menu for you to now click on Properties. Then click on the Auto Play tab at the top of the screen. You can adjust settings for Music CDs, Music Files, Pictures, Video Files and Mixed Content. Now select a multimedia types by using the pull down arrow to the right with your mouse. Then for each multimedia type, use your mouse to encircle the Select an action to perform: option. To disable that multimedia type, click on the Take no action icon at the bottom of the screen. Now click on the Apply button at the bottom of the screen to save your changes. Continue in the above fashion for each multimedia type, choosing the Take no action option. And ensure that you click on the Apply button at the bottom of the screen to save your changes. Once all options have been set, then click on OK button to exit the CD Drive Properties window. Repeat the above procedure on any additional CD Rom Drives you have in your system. Note: If you feel you have made a mistake, you can click on the Restore Defaults icon at any time. OR: 2. First of all you need to open Windows Registry Editor (regedit). To do this go to the RUN command and enter "regedit" and then press ENTER. Then browse down through the following key path. HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Policies Explorer Now look at the "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" key on the right. To enable Auto Insert Notification, right-click on that key, select Modify and change the value to 0000 95 00 00 00 and click OK. Now quit the Registry Editor and restart Windows for this to take effect. Hope it helps if I understanding right what you asked.

Hey Guys ! Thanks for all the help !
abba... I actually found the same info right after my last post. I did everything the site said to do but still got nada. I found some other ideas on the net & tried them all but nothing worked. Finally, I found a post in some forum that basically said not to bother with all the BS that ppl were posting & just DL AutoFix.exe from MS. I gave it a try & voila' - it worked !!! Yea !!! Seems some apps screwed with my registry & it cleared it right up !!!
Now on to the real reason for my request. (I really wasn't trying to turn this post into a tech - sorry if it turned out that way.) I'll check out the MS site you posted abba & will let you know how it goes. I will also check out your post(s) in software lost d plot. TIA Bro ! Once again I want to thank all who have helped here. You guys are the greatest !
