I know this is not a tech forum, but perhaps someone could point me to a program or sompn. I inherited a computer originally running Vista, but now solely running a Linux platform, I want to return it to Vista or XP. There were no system recovery discs made, how do I save all the hardware drivers to reinstall on a newly formatted hard drive with a fresh Windows platform. I know how to do this directly in Windows and if I was lazy I could even use a program like Drivermax to do the job for me, but with Linux I haven’t got a clue.

Wow Linux users are sooo pro Linux and sooo anti Windows ! Anyway I can answer my own question now. Linux doesn’t use drivers in a Windows sense; there are no drivers on a Linux system that work in Vista or XP. You just delete the Linux partition or format over it when you install a Windows platform, then spend the next 2 days trying to track down the obscure hardware drivers from all over the net because the manufacturers website is now defunct. Fun weekend ahead! Thanks anyway guys.

I was wondering if this could help...
75,000 Windows Drivers Database for Windows 2000, XP, Vista
Ever reformatted your PC and realised you no longer had your Driver CD for your Graphics or Sound Card etc., and then the standard Windows drivers did not support your cards. Well this ISO download contains the drivers for just about every hardware component that there is from brands such as Dell, HP, Compaq, IBM, Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic, as well as hardware component manufacturers Intel, 3Com, VIA, nVidia, ATI, SoundMax, and loads more. This CD is suitable for; IT, Network and Support Managers, Corporations, Government Departments, Training Organizations, Colleges and Universities, PC Assemblers/Manufacturers, Computer Technicians/Repairers, Software Developers/Beta Testers, PC Retailers and now you the home user can have it as well, why bring your PC to a Repair shop when your missing a driver.

Thanx Lynx ! Luckily the weather at the weekend was too nice to spend inside, so I haven’t started on the comp yet, I burnt the driver disc, it's clean and it may give me a head start, if not it’s a useful disc to have anyway. Many thanks.

Be careful...
Windows XP should have most if not all of your drivers already - detects them as part of install. This driver database may well be absolutely fine, but chances are that (like CODEC packs), it will contain some outdated drivers which can screw your system. Best to check the manufacturers' sites directly for any missing drivers.
Just mho borne from experience !!!

I'm going to assume this is a USB hard drive. Have you tried shutting down and powering off both the pc, and the external drive. Move the USB connector to another USB plug, and boot up the PC. See if it doesn't recognize the drive. If not, post back with some info on the OS you are using, the make of the HDD, etc. and we'll go further. A Guy
